Noam Chomsky: It is always well to keep in mind Adam Smith’s astute observation about policy formation in England. He recognized that the “principal architects” of policy—in his day the “merchants and manufacturers”—made sure that their own interests had “been most peculiarly attended to” however “grievous” the effect on others …
Honestly, am I just a Radical, to suppose things needn’t be this way? That glossy and fetching appearance, don’t you know, lies and corruptionalways pretty themselves up. Counting on people not noticing. Which of course works. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Thanksgiving from Mr. Fish, who brings us beauty and truth, when, really, we deserve neither.

… note to the rest of America — we may not be as sexy as Hollywood or Wall Street, but you know what? We’ve got a shitload of money, and we know how to organize. We’re a powerful bunch of khaki-wearing, gay-marriage-supporting, arugula-eating, Mac-using elitist nerds out here. To all of you racist homophobic non-Californian dumb fucks who find that annoying? Tough shit. We outsmarted you. We out-spent you. And now for the next eight years we’re going to be running this country. We’re going to give equal rights to gay people, fund stem-cell research, teach evolution, take down the fence on the Mexican border, and make sure abortion stays safe and legal. We’re going to pull out of Iraq, shut down Gitmo, and stop torturing people. And yeah. A black dude with a Muslim-sounding name and degrees from Columbia and Harvard is going to be in charge. So sit back down, strap yourself in, and shut the fuck up, crackers.
Oh heed these words. He speaks for, well, me. For one.
And don’t be too damn quick to assume he doesn’t also speak for you.
Obama’s going to run on ending the war, and if you don’t think that’s going to walk all over McComa …

“…it’s about the time to say it, USA have became the unjust nation that needs to be removed … removed from it’s position as the leader of the world. USA doesn’t have the moral superiority propaganda on it’s side anymore. It’s a mere mission of greed and aggression that its leading in the world now: If we don’t like you, we shoot you. If you don’t give us your wealth, we shoot you, and if you don’t like us for doing this to others, we gladly shoot you too. This has to come to an end.” —Kahlid Jarrar
Twenty-four years old. Read Kahlid. Read his family and his friends.
How simple—a picture of Iraq you can trust. If you can stand the sadness.
I figure, since we doing this to them, to their Iraq, destroying their lives … the least we can do is read, subscribe, support.
After all, how will they know how much Americans deeply regret that this stupid, stupid war … unless we tell them?

Cheney Assails Those Favoring Iraq Drawdown
“Vice President Dick Cheney offered an aggressive defense …”
Interesting concept.
“… of the Bush administration’s Iraq strategy today, asserting that those in Congress who pursue a gradual drawdown of American forces are ‘undermining’ the troops.” Read the rest of this entry »

Yes, these children are dead.
Yes, Iraq. Yes, common scene.
Yes, Rumsfeld should be strung up ….
What else can one say. Words dissolve … a swirl of leaves, caught by a gust, spirals up and over our heads, into a sky so bright it hurts.
And I am so sorry.

. . . as a former C.I.A. Middle East specialist, Reuel Marc Gerecht, said on ‘Meet the Press,’ U.S. democracy in 1900 didn’t pllet women vote. If Iraqi democracy resembled that, ‘we’d all be thrilled,’ he said. ‘I mean, women’s social rights are not critical to the evolution of democracy.

I’ve been following Sidney Blumenthal’s guardian.uk piece all over the web—It’s a fucking novel. He’s written a novel, Death of A Prime Minister and Attention Must Be Paid.
Okay, so the saga is morphing into George’s Long Day and its sloooow Journey Into Night, but so much the better. Blumenthal has picked us a juicy peach, worth memorizing. Worth clasping to your (figurative) bosom. Tragedy is nothing if not … compelling. Read the rest of this entry »
