He’s Back?

March 9th, 2010 § 4

… when you’re in Washington, folks respond to every issue, every decision, every debate, no matter how important it is, with the same question: What does this mean for the next election? (Laughter.) What does it mean for your poll numbers? Is this good for the Democrats or good for the Republicans? Who won the news cycle?
President Obama, Pennsylvania Health Care Remarks.

I don’t know, folks … I kinda think so. I think it’s the beginning of Back. It’s the shirtsleeves what done it. I’m getting ready to kick me some primary-style ass. I’ve thought about it, I’ve been twitched this way and that, I’ve thought some more, and by god, I am the POTUS and don’t you forget it. I haven’t.

And then I saw this on a Foxnews.com, of all places—

Why Obama Will Ultimately Win With Health Care
Ellen Ratner – FOXNews.com
The Democrats may lose seats in the mid-term elections but in the end getting access to health care and eliminating the games played by the health insurance industry will make many reticent Americans come over to the Obama side.

And then she said

He was a young presidential candidate who managed to overcome two well-seasoned and experienced politicians, then-Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator John McCain. President Obama is not to be underestimated.

And then she said

He is going to find a way to get health care done and in the end I predict he is going to be the one who looks like a winner.

Which is what I think too. When that jacket comes off …

§ 4 Responses to “He’s Back?”

  • Me too. In fack, back? I think he never left. The health care reform bill will be one of the most dramatic victories in the last fifty years and the dems will get enormous electoral traction from it in the midterm elections this fall.

How silly it would have been to get this done early and then lose the momentum to a bunch of whiny scrotum suckers.

Russ Feingold stands for re-election this fall, and the Repubs will likely pit their trusty like-able and somewhat accomplished local legend, Tommy Thompson, against him. He needs that momentum this year. The timing couldn’t be better. Now, if we can get some kind of open-ended public option through the reconciliation process, and then address conversion of that program to universal coverage down the road a bit, well… all of our optimism won’t look so stupid.

I learned a new word. Shouldn’t it be hyphenated, though?

      • Common practice is knocking the hyphen out of compound nouns. For example, “fig leaf” is now accepted, whereas “fig-leaf” was de rigeur not too long ago. My own practice is to use the hyphen when semantic confusion could arise should it be omitted. In this case, I believe the hyphen is optional, but in the phrase “yellow-bellied scrotum suckers” the hyphen is mandatory.
