Your memories add to mine and Sheria's, a linked blog collage. I remember struggling with bus sorrow, especially when the black lady getting on had swollen, painful-looking ankles and she used a cane. Especially when she glanced up and accidentally made eye-contact with me. As a kid just recently trusted to ride the bus by herself, I remember twitching with the desire to stand up and give her my front seat. And then staying put, because the desire to conform to the norms, to be "no trouble," was stronger at that age than my altruism or my courage. I lost my taste for taking the bus to town after a couple of rides. I wasn't brave enough. And nobody can understand Nashville's accent, not even Southerners! My son moved there a few years ago and we bring back Nashville-isms every time we visit. "Haw" for hole, as in, "He 'bout knock thet baw inna haw!" Thanks for the shout-out.
