When we try to peer into the mind of the narcissist, whether malignant or benign, we see only lack, emptiness, and a black hunger that threatens to suck us in. I agree that so much of literature and culture is about Life's requirement that we deal with what is and about our effort to do so. Paradoxically, art often grows from our refusal to accept; it's what we do instead...it's the declaration of I, in spite of all. And that is why we defend and protect it, in all its forms.
